About JSON Prettifier
The JSON Prettifier is an essential tool for developers working with JSON data. It takes compact, minified, or messy JSON and formats it into a clean, human-readable structure with consistent indentation. This makes it much easier to read, understand, and debug your data.
Features
- Client-Side Processing: Your data is never uploaded to a server, ensuring privacy and security.
- Custom Indentation: Choose between tabs or a specific number of spaces for your formatted output.
- JSONL Support: Format newline-delimited JSON (JSONL), where each line is a separate JSON object.
- File Handling: Easily import a JSON file from your computer or download the formatted output.
- Error Handling: Get instant feedback if your input is not valid JSON.
Need to explore the structure rather than re-indent it? Open the result in the JSON Viewer to see it as a collapsible tree, search it and copy any path. Broken input? Try Fix JSON.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is my JSON sent to a server?
- No. Formatting runs entirely in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.
- What is JSONL and how is it formatted?
- JSON Lines (JSONL or NDJSON) stores one JSON value per line, which is common for logs and data exports. With JSONL support on, each line is parsed and formatted separately.
- Should I indent with spaces or tabs?
- Two spaces is the most common style for JSON in web projects and is what most APIs and package.json files use. Tabs keep files smaller and let each reader choose the width. Pick whatever your project already uses.
- What if my JSON is invalid?
- The prettifier shows the parser error. For common problems such as trailing commas, single quotes or comments, paste the text into Fix JSON, which repairs them and formats the result.
- How do I explore a large JSON document?
- Use the JSON Viewer. It shows the document as a collapsible tree with search, so you can find a field and copy its path instead of scrolling through formatted text.
