Numberwang

The maths quiz everyone's talking about! Find out if a number is Numberwang, generate Numberwang numbers, and play along. A parody homage.

A textbook Numberwang.

42 is Numberwang.

A parody/homage to That Mitchell and Webb Look — the rules are deliberately nonsensical (that's the joke). Not affiliated with the BBC.

What is Numberwang?

Numberwang is “the maths quiz that simply everyone's talking about” — a recurring sketch from the BBC comedy series That Mitchell and Webb Look. Two contestants take turns saying numbers, and at apparently random moments the host announces “That's Numberwang!” The entire joke is that the rules are never explained and seem to make no sense at all — which is exactly why a “Numberwang checker” is so much fun.

This tool plays along: type any number and it gives a deadpan verdict, generates a list of “Numberwang” numbers, and even lets you play a quick round. Running gags from the sketch make an appearance too — hit Rotate the board, or use Wangernumb (Numberwang backwards) to reverse your digits.

How this checker decides

Since the show never reveals real rules, this checker uses a deliberately opaque, nonsensical formula derived from the number itself. It's deterministic — the same number always gets the same verdict — so you can share a link like /numberwang/42 and your friend sees the identical result. Roughly a third of numbers turn out to be Numberwang, because of course they do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Numberwang?
Numberwang is "the maths quiz that simply everyone's talking about" — a recurring sketch from the BBC comedy series That Mitchell and Webb Look. Contestants call out numbers and the host randomly declares "That's Numberwang!". The humour comes from the fact that the rules are never explained and appear to make no sense.
How do you know if a number is Numberwang?
You don't — and that's the joke. There are no real rules. This tool uses a deliberately opaque, nonsensical formula so that every number gets a consistent (and consistently silly) verdict you can share.
Is this the real Numberwang?
No. This is a fan parody/homage to the sketch. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the BBC or the show's creators.
What is Wangernumb?
Wangernumb is "Numberwang" spelled backwards — a round in the sketch. Here, the Wangernumb button simply reverses the digits of your number.
Why does the same number always give the same answer?
The verdict is deterministic: it is computed from the number itself, so a given number is always Numberwang (or not). That makes results reproducible and shareable.
